The Meditation performance – Ancient Therapy Music by Ramy Adly

Historic improvisation blending oud, nature, and healing

Therapy Music Program

In 2014 at Wolf Trap in Virginia, Ramy Adly envisioned something extraordinary: an open-air performance where the sounds of the oud could merge with nature, meditation, and the timeless human need for healing through music.

Inspired by Russian writer Boris Moravia’s reflections on the nature of music in Gnosis, Ramy immersed himself in improvisation—not for minutes, but for 10 continuous hours.

This became the foundation of the Therapy Music Program: a one-of-a-kind performance where improvisation becomes a vehicle for meditation, therapy, and spiritual connection.

In music history, legendary oud master Munir Bashir once remarked that the highest level of musical artistry is improvisation, yet even the greatest musicians rarely sustain it beyond 15 minutes.

Ramy’s ability to extend this into hours of creativity is not just unique—it is historic.

Improvisation, maqam, and healing in every performance

The Therapy Music Experience

For Ramy, improvisation is not only performance but also a way of channeling energy between himself, the audience, and the universe. Each note in the ancient maqam system carries therapeutic resonance, guiding listeners into states of calm, reflection, and healing.

Whether performed indoors or outdoors—in theaters, wellness retreats, or corporate settings—the program creates a space where audiences feel deeply connected: to themselves, to others, and to something larger than life.

Many audience members have described the experience as transformative. One listener shared:
“After an hour of Ramy’s performance, I felt the same deep connection I usually only reach in prayer — but this time, it linked my body, the universe, and my healing together.”

The Therapy Music Program draws inspiration from pioneers of music therapy such as Mary Priestly, Willem van de Wal, and Thayer Gaston, yet it stands apart as a living experience rather than a concept. It is as much a cultural and artistic event as it is a therapeutic one.

Because of the physical and artistic demands, Ramy offers only a few of these programs each year. Booking is highly limited and must be arranged well in advance.
